File Explorer tweaks

Twenty tweaks for File Explorer. Default mode applies one that everyone should have: showing file extensions, so invoice.pdf.exe can no longer pose as a PDF. The rest choose where File Explorer opens, tidy the navigation pane and change how drives are labelled. Five of them only apply to Windows 10.

Worth knowing

  • File extensions (-ShowKnownFileExt, in Default mode). Windows hides extensions like .exe by default, which malware uses to disguise itself. Showing them is a real safety improvement.
  • Hidden files (-ShowHiddenFolders) shows hidden files, folders and drives. Useful if you work with config files. Careful with what you delete.
  • Where File Explorer opens: Home (Windows' default), This PC, Downloads or OneDrive.
  • Navigation pane: hide Home, Gallery or OneDrive, and stop removable drives from appearing twice. On Windows 11, -AddFoldersToThisPC brings Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures and Videos back to This PC.
  • Drive letters: show them before the drive name, only for network drives, after the name (Windows' default), or not at all.
  • Windows 10 only: hiding the 3D Objects and Music folders, and the Include in library, Give access to and Share menu entries.

Tested alone on Windows 11 25H2 (build 26200.9711): changed 4 registry values.

This tweak is not meant for Windows 11 25H2, and the wizard and Default mode skip it there. Passed as a command-line switch, release 2026.08.24 applied it anyway.

Importing the undo file put all 4 back exactly as before.
