What Win11Debloat's Default mode changes

Default mode is the one-click preset: Default Mode in the wizard, or -RunDefaults on the command line. In 2026.08.24 it makes a restore point and a registry backup. Then it removes up to 84 preinstalled apps and applies 16 tweaks. This page lists every one, with the registry values and what happened when we ran it on Windows 11.

Short answer

What does Win11Debloat Default mode do?

  • Safety first: it creates a system restore point and a registry backup.
  • Apps: it removes 84 apps if installed. These are games, trials, discontinued Bing apps, third-party promos, Clipchamp, Teams, To Do, Sticky Notes, Feedback Hub and similar. Not removed: Photos, Calculator, Notepad, Paint, Snipping Tool, the Microsoft Store, Edge, OneDrive and Xbox.
  • Tweaks: it turns off telemetry, tips and ads, Edge ads, lock screen tips, Bing and Store suggestions in search, Copilot, Recall, Click to Do, the AI service autostart and Widgets. It also shows file extensions, plus three small build-specific tweaks.
  • It leaves alone: Windows Update, Defender, Fast Startup, BitLocker, the taskbar layout, the context menu and dark mode.

The command-line menu asks one extra question in Default mode: remove no apps, the default selection, or apps you pick by hand. Choosing the Xbox overlays by hand also offers to turn off Game Bar integration.

Which ones apply on your Windows version

Win11Debloat skips tweaks that do not fit the running build. That is why the review list on our Windows Server 2025 machine (build 26100) showed 13 tweaks, not 16.

Every default tweak, in detail

Expand Registry changes on any card to see the exact keys and values from the project's .reg files, and the undo file that reverses them. Three defaults are applied by PowerShell code instead of a .reg file: Widgets, Store search suggestions and the restore point.

Default apps you might want to keep

Most of the list is uncontroversial. A few entries are apps some people use every day, so untick them in Custom Setup, or with Quick Select → Default apps then untick:

  • Microsoft Teams (New) (MSTeams), if you use Teams for work or family calls.
  • Microsoft To Do, Sticky Notes, OneNote (UWP) and Microsoft Journal, if you keep notes or lists in them.
  • Alarms & Clock, if you use its timers or world clocks.
  • Quick Assist, if someone helps you remotely, or you help others.
  • Family Safety, if you manage a child account.
  • Sound Recorder, Windows Maps, Power Automate and Dev Home, if you use them.

Everything removed can be reinstalled from the Microsoft Store. How to reinstall an app.

What happened when we ran it

We ran Win11Debloat.ps1 -RunDefaults -Silent from release 2026.08.24 on a clean GitHub Actions Windows 11 Enterprise 25H2 machine (build 26200, Arm64), and recorded the system before and after. The raw files are public: run log, diff, Win11Debloat's own log.

Two removals failed. The Copilot app ID XP9CXNGPPJ97XX could not be removed because WinGet was not installed or was outdated on this image. Win11Debloat reported it as WinGet is either not installed or is outdated; XP9CXNGPPJ97XX could not be removed, finished the run anyway and warned at the end: 2 app removal(s) failed. See output above for details. The Copilot app was not installed on this machine, so nothing was left behind.

Other changes we measured

  • Service: WSAIFabricSvc (the AI fabric service) went from Automatic to Manual. No other service's start type changed.
  • Scheduled tasks: no new tasks were disabled. The telemetry tasks Win11Debloat targets were already disabled, or not present, on this Enterprise image. The log says "is already disabled" or "not found" for each.
  • Restore point: created. "System restore point created successfully".
  • Registry backup: saved to Backups\Win11Debloat-RegistryBackup-<date>_<time>.json.
  • Explorer: restarted automatically at the end of the command-line run.

Every registry value it changed

Grouped by the tweak that wrote it. "not set" means the value did not exist before, which is Windows' default behaviour.

Questions about Default mode

Is Default mode safe to use?

For most people, yes. It is the project's own recommendation. It does not select any app the project rates "unsafe", and it does not touch Windows Update, Defender or drivers. The two side effects people notice are the managed by your organization message, caused by 8 policy-based tweaks, and the removal of apps like Teams, To Do or Sticky Notes if they used them.

Does Default mode remove Microsoft Edge or OneDrive?

No. Both are optional removals that you have to tick yourself in Custom Setup. Edge is rated "Not Recommended" because Windows features and other apps depend on it.

Does Default mode disable Windows Defender or Windows Update?

No. No default tweak touches Microsoft Defender, the firewall, Windows Update or drivers. There are optional update tweaks, which delay feature updates or prevent automatic restarts, but they are not part of Default mode.

What is the difference between -RunDefaults and -RunDefaultsLite?

Both apply the same 16 default tweaks. -RunDefaults also removes the 84 default apps. -RunDefaultsLite removes no apps at all.

Why did Default mode show fewer than 16 tweaks?

Three default tweaks only apply to certain Windows versions. Hide 3D Objects is for Windows 10, Hide Chat is for Windows 11 22H2 and older, and Disable Drag Tray is for 25H2 and later. Win11Debloat leaves out the ones that do not match your build.

Can I change what Default mode selects?

Yes. Click Default Mode, then use Back to reach the app and tweak pages, adjust them and apply. You can also edit Config\DefaultSettings.json, and the SelectedByDefault flags in Config\Apps.json, in a downloaded copy.
