Debloating Windows 11 for gaming

Plenty of videos promise more FPS from debloating Windows. We cannot show you that, and we have not seen anyone show it convincingly for Win11Debloat. What we can show is what it changes that touches games, which parts of Windows your games still need, and one open report where turning something off made games worse.

Short answer

Does debloating Windows 11 improve gaming performance?

  • Do not expect more FPS. Most of what Win11Debloat removes does not run while you play. It is a clean-up, not a performance tool.
  • Be careful with Game Bar. An open report (#784) links turning Game Bar off to stutter on a recent Intel CPU, and the next release warns about removing it.
  • Keep Xbox Identity Provider, Xbox TCUI and the Microsoft Store if you play Game Pass, Store or Xbox-linked games.
  • Default mode is safe for gamers: it does not touch Game Bar, game recording or any Xbox component games use.

What Default mode does to gaming

Nearly nothing. None of its 16 tweaks is about games, and of the Xbox apps it removes only the old Xbox Console Companion, which Microsoft has discontinued. Game Bar, the Xbox app, game recording, Game Mode and the parts games use to sign in are all left alone. Everything gaming-related in Win11Debloat is optional, and listed below.

What we can and cannot measure

We run Win11Debloat on real Windows on GitHub's test machines. They are virtual machines with no graphics card, so we cannot run games or measure frame rates. What we did measure, on our test results page: Default mode freed 803 MB of app files and changed one service. Memory use could not be compared fairly, because the machines cannot restart during a test. That is why this page makes no FPS claims, and why you should be wary of pages that do.

The Game Bar stutter report

In October 2026, a user opened issue #784: “‘Disable Game Bar integration’ option causes stuttering / frametime spikes in games.”

  • The setup: Intel Core i7-14700K, NVIDIA RTX 5070, Windows 11 build 26200, Win11Debloat 2026.08.24, with Disable Game Bar integration and Disable Xbox game/screen recording applied.
  • What they measured: stutter and lower frame rates in Roblox, Euro Truck Simulator 2, GTA V and Assetto Corsa Competizione. The worst cases in their table: Euro Truck Simulator 2 dropped from 143 to 74 FPS on average, and GTA V Legacy's 1% lows fell from 88 to 0.
  • The maintainer's view: “I believe Game Bar includes optimizations for certain CPU's (like 14700k) that have both performance and efficiency cores.”
  • What changed: the project merged a warning (#787) into its unreleased code. Game Bar's description now says: “Uninstalling this app may reduce game performance on PCs with certain modern processors.”

The report is still open and marked unconfirmed: the project could not reproduce it, and it is one PC. But the advice follows from it: if your CPU has performance and efficiency cores, as many Intel chips from the 12th generation on do, keep Game Bar, or test your games before and after. If you already turned it off and games stutter, turn it back on: see below.

The Xbox parts your games need

Windows 11 has several Xbox packages. Some are apps you can remove; others are what games use to sign in to Xbox, even games you did not buy from Microsoft. Our ratings come from the project:

The tweaks gamers use

The second one exists for people who remove Game Bar: without it, games and the Xbox button on controllers keep trying to open the missing app with ms-gamingoverlay pop-ups. If you keep Game Bar, you do not need it.

Turning off Enhance pointer precision makes mouse movement match hand movement exactly, which many players of shooters prefer. The Sticky Keys tweak stops the pop-up that appears when you press Shift five times, a classic in-game interruption.

Handheld gaming PCs

On handhelds such as the ROG Ally or Legion Go, the maker's app is how you change performance modes and controls, so do not remove it. See OEM bloatware for which apps Win11Debloat lists for each maker.

Turning Game Bar back on

  1. Run Win11Debloat, open the tweaks with Detect applied tweaks ticked, untick Disable Game Bar integration and Disable Xbox game/screen recording, and apply.
  2. If you removed Game Bar, install Xbox Game Bar from the Microsoft Store.
  3. Restart the PC.

Our test found that the Game Bar integration undo file leaves one link handler behind (ms-gamebarservices), still pointing at systray.exe. It is harmless for most people, and the card above shows the exact values. See undo for the other ways back.

Questions

Does Win11Debloat increase FPS?

Not measurably, as far as anyone has shown. It removes apps that mostly do not run while you play, and its gaming tweaks are about Game Bar. One report says turning Game Bar off made games worse on a hybrid-core Intel CPU.

Will Win11Debloat break Game Pass or Xbox games?

Not in Default mode. It can if you remove the Microsoft Store, the Xbox app, Xbox Identity Provider or Xbox TCUI, all of which Game Pass and Xbox-linked games use.

Does Win11Debloat turn off Game Mode?

No. It has no Game Mode tweak. Game Mode stays as Windows set it.

Should I debloat Windows 11 for gaming?

Debloat for a cleaner, quieter Windows, not for frame rates. Default mode is safe for gamers. Leave Game Bar and the Xbox sign-in parts alone unless you know you do not need them.
