How to remove Copilot from Windows 11

Copilot shows up in several places on Windows 11: as an app, a taskbar button, inside Edge, in the Microsoft 365 app and in Settings. Win11Debloat's -DisableCopilot handles the main one, and it is part of Default mode. Here is exactly what it does, what Microsoft says about the policy it sets, and how to deal with the other places Copilot turns up.

Short answer

How do I get rid of Copilot on Windows 11?

  • Quickest: run Win11Debloat with -DisableCopilot, or use Default mode, which includes it. It uninstalls the Copilot app and hides the taskbar button.
  • By hand: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Copilot → Uninstall. That is the way Microsoft documents.
  • Copilot in Edge: add -DisableEdgeAI. It is not part of Default mode.
  • To bring it back: reinstall Copilot from the Microsoft Store.

The command

PowerShell
& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm "https://debloat.raphi.re/"))) -DisableCopilot -Silent

Add -DisableEdgeAI for Copilot in Edge, or use the command builder with the All AI off set. Needs Windows 11 22H2 or later.

What -DisableCopilot does

Three things, in this order:

  1. Hides the Copilot taskbar button for your account: ShowCopilotButton = 0.
  2. Sets the “Turn off Windows Copilot” policy for your account and for the whole PC: TurnOffWindowsCopilot = 1.
  3. Uninstalls the Copilot app: the built-in package Microsoft.Copilot, and the Microsoft Store version XP9CXNGPPJ97XX through WinGet.

Tested alone on Windows 11 25H2 (build 26200.9711): changed 3 registry values.

The undo file reverted the change. One value came back differently from before, as the undo file writes Windows' standard value: ShowCopilotButton not set → 1.

Does the Copilot policy still work?

Not on its own, according to Microsoft. Its documentation marks TurnOffWindowsCopilot as deprecated: “This policy is deprecated and may be removed in a future release.” It also says the policy “isn't for the new Copilot experience”. It was made for the old Copilot side pane, which the current Copilot app replaced. For organizations, Microsoft now says “AppLocker policy should be used instead”.

So the part of -DisableCopilot that removes today's Copilot is the uninstall. The policy does no harm, and it still covers older builds that had the side pane. It is also why Settings may say Some settings are managed by your organization afterwards. Why that happens.

What we saw on Windows 11 25H2

On our fresh Windows 11 Enterprise 25H2 test PC, Default mode set all three values. None had existed before. The Copilot app was not installed on that image, so there was nothing to uninstall. The WinGet step still ran and failed, because the image had no WinGet. Win11Debloat logged WinGet is either not installed or is outdated; XP9CXNGPPJ97XX could not be removed twice and finished everything else. On a normal PC with WinGet, this step removes the Store version of Copilot. Full test results.

Removing Copilot without Win11Debloat

  1. Uninstall the app

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find Copilot, click ⋯ and choose Uninstall.

  2. Or use PowerShell

This is the command Microsoft gives for removing the app. It removes it for your account:

    PowerShell
    Get-AppxPackage -Name "Microsoft.Copilot" | Remove-AppxPackage
  3. Hide the taskbar button, if you still see one

Right-click the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, and turn off Copilot if it is listed.

Manual removal does not stop a future update from reinstalling the app. On Pro, Enterprise and Education, Microsoft offers AppLocker for that, and a RemoveMicrosoftCopilotApp policy for Windows 11 24H2 and later. Win11Debloat does not set either of them. Running it again with -RunSavedSettings after a big update removes the app again.

Getting Copilot back

  • The app: install Microsoft Copilot from the Microsoft Store, or run winget install --id XP9CXNGPPJ97XX --source msstore.
  • The button and policy: untick Disable Microsoft Copilot in Win11Debloat's wizard, or import Regfiles\Undo\Enable_Copilot.reg from the release. How to undo.

Questions

Is it safe to remove Copilot from Windows 11?

Yes. Copilot is a separate app, and nothing else in Windows depends on it. Win11Debloat rates the Copilot app “safe to remove” and includes it in Default mode.

Will Copilot come back after a Windows update?

It can. Microsoft documents that the Copilot app is installed by some updates unless a policy blocks it. If it returns, run Win11Debloat again with -RunSavedSettings.

Does removing Copilot remove Microsoft 365 Copilot?

No. Microsoft 365 Copilot is part of the Microsoft 365 apps. Win11Debloat's Default mode removes the preinstalled Microsoft 365 hub app separately. Copilot inside Word or Excel is controlled by your Microsoft 365 subscription, not by Windows.

Can I disable Copilot on Windows 11 Home?

Yes. Win11Debloat writes the setting straight to the registry, so it works without the Group Policy editor, and uninstalling the app works on every edition.
